Write about your dream home.
Home is where my heart is! And as corny as it sounds, it’s true. My heart is divided between the kids and spouse and where they are is where I call home. The ideal place has four walls, Wi-Fi, no leaks, lots of light and wind/moving air & is accessible to everyday requirements.
These are my basics to make a house, any house a home. TBH I’ve given my dream home some thought. Here are bits and pieces of what I think I want in it. There will be some of the details from above that will come in here as well.
Living – the living area will be open to a central courtyard open to the sky with a skylight. Around this will be the kitchen, the lounge area, the dining area and the den. There will be stairs on either side of the courtyard that goes up one floor and corridors leading to bedrooms one in each direction. If the courtyard is a square or hexagon there would be one room at the edges. Have attached a rough (I mean it) sketch of either of these designs. Each room has its own balcony looking outward corridors and doors are enclosed with roof and hence are part of the interiors of the house. Each room has one set of tall picture windows facing the outside and balcony on the other side.

Ground floor, the kitchen is a step higher than the living area and den. Kitchen has tall picture windows on one wall, the other has storage. There is an island with storage under and the stove /heating/cooking is in the island facing inwards. The pantry has space for storing extras. The wall with shelves also has concealed shelves with the usual kitchen gadgets. I waved between having a closed kitchen and an open style kitchen. If it’s closed I have to think of designs for two more walls, if it’s open, then I’ve basically reduced shelf space, so the pantry has to accommodate a little bit more.
The island has a seating of sorts for breakfast and tea. The dining area that’s off the kitchen is located in the region between kitchen and living. Has a table to seat at least 12 people. Enough space around to have a couple of extra chairs sitting around.
The living and lounge areas at this point are one, however if I have the space and can accommodate it, then will have two different spaces, the lounge area will actually have the bookshelf and the board games with lots of comfortable seating and tables to place devices and gadgets. The living area will probably have a slightly (very marginally) more formal touch with a couch and seating that’s more of a face-to-face space. While the living and lounge areas are at the same level, there will be lots of indoor plants that will act as a screen or space differentiators. The living area will also have tall picture windows facing outwards. This house is designed to sit in the middle of a larger plot of land, the picture windows giving the illusion of being amidst nature while actually remaining indoors.
Obviously, I’ve forgotten the powder rooms and shower areas. Ideally I will have an outhouse, just outside the kitchen, that will house the wash areas and a couple of powder rooms. There will be one off the dining area and one off the living area. Each bedroom has an attached bath with a powder room attached and each landing on the stairs will have a powder room.
I prefer having a fence around the space. I love animals and I love watching animals in the wild. So any plot of land in nature would mean that I am part of some migratory animals path and while I don’t have issues sharing the space with them, I don’t want them ‘in’ my space. The fence will help to give them the access to the path I may have encroached on, but keep them safe as well as me safe.
I haven’t yet thought if I want a car park within this fence or maybe just outside. But I may have to consider also including a generator for when power cuts happen. And maybe a recycling unit or a composter set up. Maybe the recycling near the garage and the composting near the kitchen. There will of course be an outhouse near the garage accessible to guests as well. The space just off the garage will have a mudroom of sorts where you can clean your footwear and swap it for clean footwear for the house and jackets and raincoats and outer wear.
I’ve seen setups with an inbuilt pool, and I’m not too much of a pool person, so I would rather set up zip lines and an adventure course that would work as an alternate fitness space for everyone.
My house is always open to dogs, hence the space under the stairs will home the kennels, while their food and paraphernalia is stored around the kennel. The outdoor adventure area will definitely have something set up for them as well. While they have free rein to walk anywhere around the home, their space to rest will be defined as well as where they eat.
Lots of air, lots of light, lots of sun, lots of plants, indoors and outdoors lots of dogs – that’s what I see when I imagine my dream home. I haven’t seen a television in it, but I know everyone will come with their device, so I will just ensure that I have internet accessibility everywhere. There! I think that covers it all. My dream home will have all this and all my favourite people in one place.
