Are there any activities or hobbies you’ve outgrown or lost interest in over time?
I define hobbies as something you do, when you have the time from your everyday activities and life. And I’ve stuck with some of mine since I was a teenager for as long as I’ve made my resume and included these details in them. I’ve listed them here in no particular order but with a little more details into them.
Watching movies: A course in Film Criticism, got me into watching movies and analysing them. I’ve moved from watching award winning ‘intellectual’ movies to watching all movies. And binge watching shows. Some interesting, some just so, some outright crazy! And the reason for this willing shift was to understand why the effort was made. At the end of the day I think it boils down to the desperate urge to communicate. A base instinct that we have as humans, to connect and communicate our point of view and perspective on the world. And I’ve loved this journey, definitely not giving up on it now. I’ve loved all kinds of movies, but the Sci-fi-thriller-book-to-movie versions and the gory ones and the crazy ones (read: Jurassic park series, Jaws, Deep Blue Sea, The Meg, Marvel Cinematic Universe, DC to name a few) keep me sane and act as white noise while I work.
Reading: I started with the usual Enid Blyton moved to Mills &Boon and Danielle Steele generously interspersed with Stephen King, Colin Forbes and Robin Cook. Today, I also read tons of self help and marketing books, ‘the storytellers secret’, ‘storybrand’, ‘traction’. But Stephen king now is also balanced with Wilbur Smith and more Robin Cook. The world’s they create is beyond the ordinary and worth every extra bit of time you can scrounge up in the day to go through them.
Photography: I love taking pictures. I am what you call or would refer to as a ‘trigger happy photographer’. I love the fact that today, I don’t need to wait to ‘develop’ my pics and can view them immediately. I am aware of basic editing skills but rarely use them. I use the Nikon D40 and x6-2. Both amazing cameras. I love using the Samsung fold4 and the i15 pro max for everyday pictures and videos. Not giving this up or stopping anytime soon. I love the memories these create and the loops they throw up.
Puppet making and DIY: I am a trained kindergarten teacher and before that I used to love DIY stuff. I’ve ensured the kids grew up with numerous versions of Lego and transformers toys. It’s kept us busy on many a rainy day, when we’ve been locked indoors. I’ve made paper mache octopus, and various kinds of animals using balloons, socks, tetra packs and bottles. This is something that I adore because of my belief in reusability. However, over the years I’ve stopped making puppets – the kids don’t really require it anymore. I still do the usual amount of DIY since we still do purchase some of our stuff from ikea. But yes, one of my interests that has been dropped is the puppet making- a very messy affair, but a very satisfying one.
