I don’t want to live a long life. I cannot imagine what that is going to look like, probably because my parents and In-laws passed away between their 65th and 75th birthdays. I am happy with what ever comes my way. I just want it to be quick, if I have the option to make that choice. But, for the concept of a long life, I am forced to think about sustainability, gratitude and wonder.
A lot of questions come to mind, but I think the top three for me would be, sustainability, gratitude and wonder. This when it is related to age, could also be a legacy. What can I do today, that I can do even later in life and will keep things steady without major life-altering repercussions? And what kind of a mindset should I really have at that time – is it something I develop then, or is it something I start practicing today and keep it going? For instance, will you turn a pescatarian and then move to a desert where you are unable to source your requirements? May not seem practical right? So, what then would be sustainable? Sourcing the local produce and partaking of that, not having dietary restrictions that would limit your movement – something that you can keep going, no matter where you live and with who you share the later years?
Gratitude, because after a certain point, you learn to be thankful for every opportunity that comes your way. The fact that you can travel on your own, at your own pace, or even the fact that you are up and about without assistance or aid.
And wonder, because you are witnessing something beautiful everyday and you get the opportunity to enjoy it without a worry for the future. Change is a constant today, everything is in motion and constant flux, nothing stands still, so its that much more important for us to appreciate the little things we witness, because it helps keep us relevant. And at the end of the day, this relevance is what keeps us going. Keeps us looking forward to the next change, the next step or the next destination. The three pronged, circle, that is sustainability, gratitude and wonder, makes even the late sunset seem pretty.
